We’ve had a
wonderful, busy day in Mahadeva Children’s Home, Killinochi. Killinochi was an
epicentre during the civil war, leaving many families displaced due to the
traumatic consequences of civil conflict.
Mahadeva Children’s Home
is a beacon of hope for over 200 children who, through no fault of their own,
have been caught up in post-conflict trauma and dislocation.
Between the 10 of us,
we managed to spend time with all the children currently based at the home.
This morning
volunteers worked in the two pre-schools connected with the children’s home.
In the afternoon /
evening, ‘the boys’ spent a couple of hours with the Mahadeva Boys, whilst ‘the
girls plus Reverend Dan’ worked with the girls in their living quarters.
Reflections from the day:
Jonny:
Helping out at the pre-school in Killinochi today gave me
the opportunity to keep observing the effect that our work has. Similarly to the
pre-school yesterday, today showed that even the simplest of activities could
bring together the children and ourselves despite being from very different backgrounds.
Today showed how appreciative the children were of what we were doing and also
how much they enjoyed themselves.
Chris:
Visiting the Mahadeva Children’s Home for the boys age 6-18 was
a very humbling and extremely enjoyable experience. From the minute we stepped
out of the bus we were warmly greeted and taken straight to the playing grounds
by about 50-70 boys. They were all eager to start playing and use the equipment
we had bought. The constant smiles and shouts of laughter remained throughout
the afternoon as we played several different games of cricket, football,
volleyball and catch. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for both the
children of the home and the OST volunteers.
Team 1 have also arrived in Sri Lanka this afternoon. They will be spending a few days on an exciting tourist itinerary before joining us in Batticaloa on Sunday.
